Our Legacy

Honoring the Vision of Dr. Raichand Khimji Nisar
Founder | Visionary | Healer

To this day, patients remember with gratitude how he treated everyone with equal care, whether they could pay or not.

A Humble Beginning

Born in 1940 in a remote village in Kachchh, Raichand grew up as the first educated person in his family. The family moved into the premises on the ground floor of Modi Bhavan in 1959, which was later to be transformed into its current avatar as the Nisar Eye Hospital.

Dr. Raichand graduated as the first doctor in his family from the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Indore in 1965. He then joined the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and completed his training in Ophthalmology under the mentorship of the illustrious Dr. B.T. Maskati, a giant of his time. In 1968, he became the first eye surgeon in his entire community, to which he was deeply attached and would serve as a loyal son.

Founding Nisar Eye Hospital

Dr. Raichand established the Nisar Eye Hospital in 1969 with an aim to provide affordable eye care to all sections of the society. To this day, patients remember with gratitude how he would waive the fees of those who could not pay, yet he would treat them just the same.

He was among the first few surgeons in Mumbai:

  • To implant intraocular lenses
  • To operate cataract patients on a day-care basis.

A Life of Service

Dr. Raichand served as the Honorary Treasurer of the Bombay Ophthalmological Association for several years. He conducted innumerable free eye camps across Maharashtra during his association with the Lions’ Club. However, he was closest to his own community and served for many years as the President of the Wagad Kala Kendra, a cultural, medical, and educational organisation. He organised rural eye camps in the villages in Kachchh and was among the first eye surgeons to provide access to modern eye surgery to the poorest in the villages.

A Resilient Spirit

Dr. Raichand fell grievously ill in September 1992 and was in intensive care for 6 months in the hospital. The blessings of all his patients helped him to make a miraculous recovery and he returned home against all odds. He gradually resumed his clinical practice aided by his daughter Komal, a trained ophthalmic assistant and his son, Dr. Jayesh, who had by then qualified as an eye surgeon to join him.

Dr. Raichand Nisar passed away peacefully at home in 2010.

A Living Homage

Today, Nisar Eye Hospital stands as a living tribute — a space built not just with bricks, but with belief. His values of compassion, equality, and excellence continue to guide every decision, every treatment, and every interaction

Nisar Eye Hospital carries forward Dr. Raichand Nisar’s unwavering dedication to his people.
